Los Angeles, 2025. The introverted Theodore Twombly earns his living by writing personal letters for other people. Meanwhile, he tries to get over his divorce with his wife Catherine. One day, Theodore becomes intrigued by a sophisticated computer system, which forms its own identity based on the user’s preferences. Upon initiating it, he is delighted to meet “Samantha,” a bright, female voice, who is insightful, sensitive and surprisingly funny. As her needs and desires grow, in tandem with his own, their friendship deepens into an eventual love for each other.
Her investigates the role artificial Intelligence (AI) can have in our future personal (love) lives. Can you fall in love with an entity that does not have a physical body? Can an operating system actually love you back? Join us for the movie and share your thoughts about these topics during the aftertalk!
Aftertalk with expert guest Stefan Leijnen
After the movie, we will host an interview with Dr. Stefan Leijnen. Stefan is a professor at the lectorate of Artificial Intelligence at the HU. He researches the applications and boundaries of AI and focuses on human values within his research. Can AI be transparent? Is AI to be trusted? How creative is AI? And does AI have autonomy? Not only do these questions rise in his research, but after watching Her you will want to know the answer!
