Hoogt on Tour’s CineArt is back again: idiosyncratic films at art hub De Nijverheid. Our Oktober film: Manifesto. Cate Blanchett performs manifestos as a series of striking monologues. With your Cineville-card, you can bring a plus one for free!

A respectable mother is saying grace at the table before lunch, while her sons and husband wait impatiently. “I am for an art that does something other than sit on its ass in a museum”, she says. “I am for art which develops holes like socks, which is eaten like a piece of pie.”

The words are from a manifesto by pop artist Claes Oldenburg from 1961. They are intoned by Cate Blanchett, in one of thirteen (!) roles the actress plays in Manifesto, Julian Rosefeldt’s experimental film, for which he draws on the statements of more than fifty artists and thinkers from the twentieth century. This film, derived from Rosefeldt’s multi-screen film installation of the same name, is a tour de force in which leading ideas about art and society are handily presented in twelve parts. The remarkably versatile Blanchett (her roles include a homeless person, a puppeteer, a director and a choreographer) invests the text with freshness and vitality. The witty, entertaining Manifesto is proof that visionary ideas really can be timeless.

Hoogt on Tour’s CineArt is terug: eigenzinnige films bij Culturele Vrijhaven De Nijverheid. Onze oktober film: Manifesto. Cate Blanchett speelt dertien verschillende rollen waarbij ze een aantal van de meest invloedrijke en emotionele manifesten uit de geschiedenis belichaamt. Met je Cineville-pas mag je voor deze avond een gratis +1 meenemen!

Een keurige moeder bidt aan tafel voor de lunch, terwijl haar zoons en echtgenoot ongeduldig luisteren. “Ik ben voor een kunst die niet alleen op zijn kont zit in een museum”, zegt ze. “Ik ben voor kunst waar gaten in vallen als in sokken, die gegeten wordt als een stuk taart.”

De woorden komen uit een manifest van popart-kunstenaar Claes Oldenburg uit 1961. Ze worden uitgesproken door Cate Blanchett, in een van de dertien (!) rollen die de actrice speelt in Manifesto, Julian Rosefeldts experimentele film waarvoor hij putte uit de statements van meer dan vijftig kunstenaars en andere denkers uit de twintigste eeuw. De film, afgeleid van Rosefeldts gelijknamige multiscreen-filminstallatie, is een tour de force waarin leidende denkbeelden over kunst en maatschappij handzaam worden vervat in twaalf delen. De verbluffend veelzijdige Blanchett (ze speelt onder meer een zwerver, poppenspeler, directeur en choreograaf) maakt de teksten fris en springlevend. Het geestige, onderhoudende Manifesto bewijst dat visionaire ideeën werkelijk tijdloos kunnen zijn.
