About the film
Pain and Glory tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas), a film director in his physical decline. Some of them in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the 60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity, the first desire, his first adult love in the Madrid of the 80s, the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense, writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable, the early discovery of cinema, and the void, the infinite void that creates the incapacity to keep on making films.
Pain and Glory talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one’s own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation.
Oscar-winning director Pedro Almodóvar called his 21st film the most personal yet. Pain and Glory premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where Antonio Banderas won the Best Actor prize.

Over CineArt – Dolor y Gloria
Dolor y Gloria is de nieuwe film van Spaanse meester Pedro Almodóvar (La Piel Que Habito, Volver, Todo Sobre Mi Madre), waarin een regisseur op leeftijd terugblikt op het verleden en de keuzes die hij heeft gemaakt. Met prachtige rollen voor steracteurs Antonio Banderas en Penélope Cruz.
Salvador Mallo (Antonio Banderas) heeft al in geen jaren een film meer gemaakt, maar kan gelukkig nog teren op de successen die hij als regisseur heeft genoten. Wanneer een oude film van Salvador onder het stof vandaan wordt gehaald, brengt dat hem in contact met voormalig acteur Alberto (Asier Etxeandia). De twee worden eindelijk weer herenigd, nadat ze lang geleden zijn gebrouilleerd. De ontmoeting zet een kettingreactie in gang, waarin het verleden terugkeert in het leven van Salvador. Terugdenkend aan zijn jeugd en zijn moeder (Penélope Cruz) wordt hij gedwongen om zijn demonen onder ogen te komen.
Oscarwinnende regisseur Pedro Almodóvar noemde zijn 21e film de meest persoonlijke tot nu toe. Dolor y gloria ging in première op het Filmfestival van Cannes, waar Antonio Banderas de prijs voor Beste Acteur won.
